5 Elements of Compelling Cybersecurity Infographics

Reaching people with a message in the cybersecurity industry is often as much about the medium as it is about the message itself. If you pick the wrong medium, you can decrease your audience by a factor of ten or more. In fact, studies have found that people are literally 30 times more likely to view an infographic than they are to read a full article!

If you ever look at old advertisements, you might notice that they’re full of dense text and they use minimal visuals. Yet today, advertisements have changed completely. Any company that stuck with the old-style ended up going out of business.

So how can you make sure that you will reach your cybersecurity audience as effectively as possible? Read on to learn five ways to make your next infographic truly compelling.

1. Tell a Story

The most compelling infographics are designed to tell a story. Humans have told stories for thousands of years, and our brains are built to relate to them.

To make a powerful infographic, you should ask yourself questions related to stories. The first set of questions you should ask are about the story that you want your audience to receive. Why do they think you are telling this story, what is the story, and who is it intended for?

After viewing your infographic, you want your audience to be able to answer these questions the way that you intend.

On the other hand, you need to answer all of these questions for yourself, too. What is the message you want to express, and who do you intend to receive it?

2. Reference Powerful Data

A lot of people have heard that customers don't respond to dry facts and data. While there is some truth to this, it is not a black and white rule.

In fact, the right number, used the right way, can be the most memorable part of the story. Sometimes, it's the numbers that people tell their acquaintances when they talk about the story they got out of your infographic.

3. Use Concise Copy

Infographics let their images do a lot of the talking. However, you will need words to clarify the exact meaning of your message. Make sure that you use enough words to get your message across, but no more.

4. Coordinate the Design

There should be harmony in all of your infographic elements. If your story is exciting, then you will want exciting colors and an exciting font. If your story is tragic, then you will want understated colors and a more standard font.

5. Use Graphs and Charts

Data can be powerful, but if you ever feel the need to express a complicated point in data, then you should never do so in dense text. Instead, present your data comparisons in attractive, easy-to-digest graphs and charts.
